Chroma on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS by cloudimg. The open-source embeddings/vector database for AI and RAG applications, preinstalled with nginx, a dedicated data disk and a per-VM password generated at first boot. 24/7 expert support.
## Chroma on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS by cloudimg
Chroma is the open-source embeddings and vector database used to give AI applications long-term memory and to power retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). It stores documents, embeddings and metadata and serves fast similarity search over a simple API. The cloudimg image installs Chroma 1.5 in a Python virtual environment, fronts it with an nginx reverse proxy on port 80, persists all data on a dedicated Azure data disk, and generates a unique password on the first boot of every VM. Backed by 24/7 expert support.
Dedicated Data Disk
Persisted collections, embeddings and indexes live on a dedicated, independently resizable Azure data disk mounted at /var/lib/chroma, kept separate from the operating system disk and re-provisioned with every VM. Snapshot that disk to back up your vector store.
Secure By Default
The password is unique per VM and stored in a root-only file; clients authenticate as admin. nginx fronts the loopback Chroma server so only port 80 is exposed; front it with TLS for public access.
