Fess is an open source enterprise search server. It crawls web sites, file systems and databases, extracts the text of every document with Apache Tika, indexes it and serves the results through a search interface and a JSON API. It handles the formats a document repository actually holds, including PDF, Microsoft Office, OpenDocument and HTML, and tokenises more than twenty languages.
Results are filtered by role, so people only see the documents they are allowed to see. Crawls run on a schedule you set, and every crawler, index and permission setting is managed from a browser based administration console.
The cloudimg image ships the search server and its search engine already wired together and tuned to fit the machine, with the engine bound to loopback and fenced at the service level so your index is never exposed. There is no default password: the administrator credential and an administration API token are generated on the virtual machine at first boot, before the search server is allowed to start. A self test command ships with the image and proves crawling, indexing and searching work end to end on your own instance, and a paired deployment guide walks through indexing your first documents. Supported 24/7.
