MaxKB (Max Knowledge Brain) is an open source, GPL-3.0 licensed platform for building question answering agents on your own content. You upload documents or crawl a website into a knowledge base; MaxKB splits and indexes it, and an agent answers questions from it, showing the knowledge source each answer used. Agents can be published as a chat page, embedded in your own website or called through an OpenAI compatible API, and workflows, tools and MCP connections extend them further.
This is the Community Edition, which supports up to 50 knowledge bases, 5 agents and 2 user accounts. It suits support teams, internal help desks and anyone who wants a private knowledge base assistant on their own server.
The image works the moment you sign in: a small local language model (Qwen2.5 1.5B on the CPU through Ollama) is already added to MaxKB, so you can build and test agents with no API key, and you can connect Azure OpenAI or other hosted models for production. First boot generates the admin password, database and Redis passwords, secret keys and TLS certificate uniquely for each VM, and nothing serves until it has done so and proven the published default password is refused. MaxKB, its database and the model stay on private addresses behind HTTPS, the containers cannot reach the Azure metadata service, and a step by step deployment guide and 24/7 support come with it.
