Overview
Oracle Linux is a free, enterprise grade Linux distribution built to be binary compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Oracle provides the binaries at no cost and permits redistribution, so there is no subscription and no licence key to use, patch or resell it. This image is Oracle Linux 7.9, the final Oracle Linux 7 minor release, with the packages an Azure guest cannot use removed: wireless, TV tuner and SAS controller firmware, physical disk and storage array tooling, the BIOS fakeraid stack, the KVM guest agent, the crash dump tooling and the local mail server. The image ships a manifest recording exactly what was removed, exactly what the dependency guard refused, and why.
Oracle Linux 7 reached the end of its free Premier support lifecycle on 31 December 2024 and the public channels publish no further security errata, so this image is patched to the final available Oracle Linux 7.9 state at build time and is provided for legacy and compatibility workloads. A smaller package set means fewer components that can carry a vulnerability, but it is not a substitute for Oracle Linux Extended Support or for migrating to a supported release.
Why the cloudimg image
cloudimg trims the standard image conservatively and measurably: every removal is dependency checked twice before it happens, the trim runs against a positive control that proves the guard still refuses to touch the packages the system cannot live without, and the image is rebooted and reproved before it ships, so it carries no broken dependency and anything you need reinstalls normally. Nothing structural changes: both Oracle kernel lines are kept, SELinux stays enforcing, the unattended updater stays armed for the moment you attach Oracle Linux Extended Support, and the Oracle registration path is untouched. There is no baked in credential: the root account is locked, password authentication is off and access is by the SSH key you choose at launch, so no two instances share a secret. The delta against the standard image is published in the guide and shipped on the image itself, and the end of life position is stated plainly rather than glossed over. Backed by 24/7 support.
