Overview

Oracle Linux 9 is Oracle's free and freely redistributable enterprise Linux distribution, binary compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 and supported by Oracle to June 2032, with extended support to June 2035. This is the 64 bit Arm (AArch64) build running the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel, for the Arm based virtual machine sizes powered by the Azure Cobalt 100 processor, which pair strong per core performance with lower cost than comparable x86 sizes.

Its root filesystem lives on an LVM logical volume inside a volume group rather than on a fixed partition, so the root volume can be grown onto a larger disk, data volumes added and storage reshaped on a running machine with standard LVM tools. It suits teams running Oracle Linux fleets that want to move web, application and container workloads onto Arm with room to grow storage. Why the cloudimg image

The cloudimg image starts from Oracle's own Arm64 LVM image, is brought fully up to date at build time and again immediately before capture, and boots its newest kernel with superseded kernels removed. No credential is baked in: access is by the SSH key you choose at launch, password logins are off, the root password is locked, and SSH host keys, the machine id and network identity are regenerated per machine. Automatic updates apply every available update and never reboot on their own, the rpcbind port Oracle's image leaves open is closed, and defects that left Oracle's image degraded on Azure Arm sizes are fixed: the accelerated networking interface is no longer broken on reboot, the temporary disk warning no longer fails on sizes without a temporary disk, and the clock runs in UTC.
