Overview

phpMyAdmin, the popular web interface for administering MySQL and MariaDB databases, preinstalled and running behind nginx and php-fpm with its own bundled MariaDB server, ready to browse tables, run SQL and manage databases and users in your browser within minutes of launch. The bundled database listens on loopback only and a unique root password is generated on first boot. Backed by 24/7 cloudimg support.

Description

phpMyAdmin is the most widely used web interface for administering MySQL and MariaDB databases from a browser: browse and edit tables, run SQL, import and export data, and manage users and permissions without a desktop client. This image ships phpMyAdmin as a self-contained appliance with its own bundled MariaDB server, so it is immediately useful on its own - not just a client waiting for an external database. A working database admin console is serving within minutes of launch. The currently available version is phpMyAdmin 5.2.

Application Stack

phpMyAdmin runs as a PHP application: nginx answers on port 80 and passes requests to php-fpm over a local socket, and phpMyAdmin talks to the bundled MariaDB server over the loopback interface. The database listens on 127.0.0.1 only and is never exposed to the network by the image - the instance security group opens SSH, HTTP and HTTPS but not the database port. systemd starts MariaDB, php-fpm and nginx on boot and restarts them on failure.

Manage Your Databases

Create and drop databases and tables, insert, edit and delete rows in a spreadsheet-style grid, and design schemas with indexes, foreign keys and column types from the browser. Write and run arbitrary SQL with syntax highlighting and query history, import and export in SQL, CSV, JSON and other formats, and manage user accounts and privileges. The phpMyAdmin configuration storage is fully set up on first boot, so relational features, bookmarks, query history and designer views work without a setup warning.

Point It at Other Servers Too

While the image ships a bundled MariaDB server for immediate use, phpMyAdmin can administer any reachable MySQL or MariaDB server - point it at another database host on your network to manage existing databases from the same console.

Secure First Boot

On the first boot of your instance a one-shot service generates a fresh MariaDB root password unique to that instance, hardens the database (removes anonymous users, drops the test database and disables remote root), generates a unique cookie-authentication secret, and writes the credentials to a file only the root user can read. No shared or default database password ever ships in the image.

Data on Its Own Volume

The MariaDB data directory lives on a dedicated, independently resizable data volume kept separate from the operating system disk, so you can grow storage, snapshot and back up the database on its own schedule.

Use Cases

A browser-based admin console for a bundled MariaDB database you host in your own account. A shared database administration front end for a team. A self-hosted alternative to a hosted database console. A single console for administering several MySQL and MariaDB servers across your network.
