Easy Digital Downloads is a complete open source ecommerce platform built on WordPress, purpose built for selling digital products: ebooks, software, plugins, themes, music, photography, design assets and documents. This image delivers a fully installed, production ready digital storefront, so you can begin accepting payments within minutes of launch rather than spending hours on manual server configuration.

Why This Image Instead of Self Install

Installing Easy Digital Downloads yourself means provisioning a server, configuring Apache, MySQL and PHP, hardening credentials, separating data from the OS volume, and setting up process management. This image handles all of that automatically on first boot:

• Dedicated data disks: the MySQL database lives on one independently resizable EBS volume and the WordPress code plus delivered files live on a second, so you can scale storage without replacing the instance.
• Hardened credential generation: a one shot systemd service creates unique MySQL root, WordPress database and WordPress administrator passwords on first boot. No default or shared credentials ever ship in the image.
• Automatic process recovery: systemd manages both Apache and MySQL, starting them on boot and restarting them on failure.
• Zero configuration launch: the storefront and WordPress admin are served on port 80 immediately, and the site pins itself to your instance public address with no manual DNS or vhost editing.

Compared to hosted marketplaces that take a percentage of every sale, you keep all of your revenue and retain full ownership of customer data on your own infrastructure.

Security Posture

The image ships with no default login credentials. On first boot, all passwords are generated uniquely for your instance and stored in a root only file. Download links use signed, time limited URLs so purchased files cannot be redistributed. TLS and HTTPS are not preconfigured but are fully supported, and cloudimg support can assist with certificate installation and custom domain setup. We recommend configuring your AWS Security Group to restrict inbound traffic to ports 80 and 443, and enabling EBS encryption on your data volumes for encryption at rest.

Application Stack

WordPress with the Easy Digital Downloads plugin runs on PHP 8.3 under Apache on port 80. MySQL stores products, orders, customers and settings. Two dedicated EBS data disks separate the database and webroot from the OS volume, enabling independent resizing and simplified backups. Systemd manages all services.

Getting Started

1. Launch the image from AWS Marketplace.

2. SSH into your instance and retrieve the generated admin password from the root only credentials file.

3. Browse to your instance public IP and sign in to wp-admin.

4. Add your downloadable products, configure pricing and connect a payment gateway.

5. Share your storefront link with customers.
