Overview

This is the dedicated multiplayer server for Freeciv, the free and open source turn based empire building strategy game. It is the headless companion to the desktop game: players keep using their normal Freeciv client, point it at your server address instead of a public one, and get their own lobby where they can chat, take a player slot, agree the ruleset and play a full game whose entire rules engine runs on your host. The server holds the world, resolves every turn, fills empty slots with artificial intelligence players and gives whoever runs it full console control over the game.

It suits gaming communities, clans, LAN parties, classrooms and tournament organisers who want a private, always on game host with predictable latency and their own rules and ruleset, rather than sharing a public server with everyone else. The full server ruleset set is included, from the upstream default through the multiplayer tuned and classic variants to the science fiction alien ruleset.

Why the cloudimg image

cloudimg builds the server from the current stable upstream source release rather than the older packaged one, so it matches the client series your players actually run and they can connect without downgrading. Only the server half of the game is compiled and installed, so the image carries the rules engine, its rulesets, nations and scenarios and its licence text, and none of the tilesets, sound, music or flag artwork that belong to the client; the compiler toolchain is removed again before capture to keep the image small and the security surface low. It is secure by default: there is no network administrator password to leak because the server has none, every network connection is capped at the ordinary play access level so nobody can take control by connecting first, administration is local only over SSH through a root only console, and the server physically cannot start until first boot has written the configuration for your own instance. The server runs unprivileged, exactly one port is opened, the base is fully patched with unattended security upgrades enabled, and every deployment is paired with a step by step deploy guide, backed by 24/7 cloudimg support.
