Overview

FreeRADIUS is an open source RADIUS server that provides centralised authentication, authorisation and accounting, known as AAA, for network access. Wireless access points, VPN concentrators, 802.1X switches and captive portals ask it whether a user may connect and record their sessions. It is driven entirely by a flat configuration tree, with each network device identified by its own shared secret and users checked against a pluggable backend, from a simple flat file to LDAP, SQL and EAP for enterprise wireless.

Why the cloudimg image

The cloudimg image is hardened and fully patched with FreeRADIUS preconfigured to answer authentication and accounting out of the box. The well known testing123 shared secret and the demonstration user are removed, and a unique shared secret plus a sample user and password are generated on first boot, so no default credential ships and no two instances share one. Every instance is backed by a paired deploy guide and 24/7 cloudimg support.

Common uses

  • Wireless and 802.1X network authentication
  • VPN and network access AAA
  • Centralised RADIUS for switches and access points
