Overview
Oracle Linux 7 is a free, enterprise grade Linux distribution built to be binary compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7. Oracle provides the binaries at no cost and permits redistribution, so there is no subscription and no licence key to use, patch or resell it. Version 7.9 is the final minor release in the Oracle Linux 7 family.
End of life notice: Oracle Linux 7 reached the end of its free Premier support lifecycle on 31 December 2024, and the public update channel no longer receives new security errata. This image is a clean foundation patched to the final available Oracle Linux 7.9 state at build time. It is intended for legacy applications and compatibility testing that still require an Oracle Linux 7 or RHEL 7 compatible base. You own ongoing patching: Oracle Linux Extended Support is required for continued security updates, so treat this as a fixed, capture date baseline rather than a system that keeps patching itself from the free channel.
Why the cloudimg image
The cloudimg image is an Oracle Linux 7.9 base brought up to the final available public patch state at build time, with SELinux left in Enforcing mode and the root password locked. No credential is baked in: access is by the SSH key you choose at launch, so no two instances share a secret. The image ships with the automatic updater armed so it applies whatever the accessible channels still carry, which is the correct posture the moment you attach Oracle Linux Extended Support, but because the free channel is frozen we do not imply ongoing patching: the end of life status is stated plainly and continued security updates are your responsibility. The update path stays enabled and 24/7 support is included.
