Overview

Vane, known as Perplexica until the project was renamed, is an open source, MIT licensed AI answering engine. You ask a question; Vane searches the web through its own private SearXNG metasearch instance, reads the most relevant results and writes an answer with numbered citations that link back to its sources, so every claim can be checked. It offers Speed, Balanced and Quality research modes, web, discussion and academic sources, questions about your own uploaded files, a Discover news feed and a Library of past conversations.

Answers are written by the model provider you connect: OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Groq, any OpenAI compatible service, or a model server you run yourself such as Ollama or LM Studio. It suits teams that want a self hosted alternative to hosted AI search services, with their own provider account and their search history kept on their own server.

Why the cloudimg image

Upstream Vane has no login, and an exposed instance lets anyone read its settings, including your provider API keys, and spend on them. The cloudimg image puts the whole application behind HTTPS and a login generated uniquely for each VM at first boot, with a per VM certificate and a fresh SearXNG secret, and nothing answers until first boot has created them. Vane and its private SearXNG listen on loopback only and are blocked from the cloud metadata service, the page reading browser is a current Chrome Headless Shell, and a local embedding model is preinstalled so search ranking needs no key. Every component is pinned and checksum verified, the paired deployment guide covers connecting your provider, the API and your own domain, and every deployment carries 24/7 support.

Common uses

  • A private, self hosted alternative to hosted AI search services
  • Research answers with citations you can verify, using your own model provider account
  • An AI search API for internal tools, behind your own login
