Overview

This is the dedicated multiplayer server for The Battle for Wesnoth, the open source turn based fantasy strategy game. It is the headless companion to the desktop game: players keep using their normal Wesnoth client, point it at your server address instead of the public one, and get their own lobby where they can chat, create games, join each other and play a full match relayed through your host. The server holds no game content of its own, it relays the game between clients, and it gives the person who runs it moderator controls over the lobby, including kicking and banning, setting a message of the day and watching who is connected.

It suits gaming communities, clans, LAN parties, classrooms and tournament organisers who want a private, always on lobby with predictable latency and their own rules, rather than sharing the public server with everyone else.

Why the cloudimg image

cloudimg builds the server from the current stable upstream source release rather than the older packaged one, so it matches the client series your players actually run and they can connect without downgrading. The server target is compiled on its own, which means the image carries only the server binary and its licence text: no game data, artwork or music is redistributed, and the compiler toolchain is removed again before capture to keep the image small and the security surface low. It is secure by default: there is no administrator password baked into the image at all, and the server physically cannot start until first boot has minted a password unique to your instance and written it to a root only file, so no credential is ever shared between customers. The moderator control channel is readable only by root and the service account, the server runs unprivileged, exactly one port is opened, the base is fully patched with unattended security upgrades enabled, and every deployment is paired with a step by step deploy guide, backed by 24/7 cloudimg support.
