Overview

whois-api-server is an open source WHOIS and RDAP query API. It looks up domains, IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, CIDR prefixes and AS numbers against live WHOIS and RDAP registries, parses the result to structured JSON, and caches it, exposing typed lookup endpoints and a browser lookup page. It suits domain and IP intelligence, registration monitoring, and enriching data pipelines with authoritative registry information.

Why the cloudimg image

cloudimg delivers whois-api-server hardened and fully patched on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, preconfigured with a self contained lookup web page so a real query returns registry data on first boot. The service runs as a non root user behind a hardened reverse proxy with a strict path allowlist, the application port is fenced to loopback so metrics and admin paths never face the internet, the public lookup path is rate limited to prevent open relay abuse, and 24/7 support is included.

Common uses

  • Domain, IP and ASN registry lookups
  • Domain registration and expiry monitoring
  • Enriching data pipelines with registry data
