Overview

Flowable is a business process and workflow engine that executes BPMN, CMMN and DMN models to automate business processes and decisions. It is used to orchestrate approvals, case management and complex workflows across systems.

Why the cloudimg image

cloudimg delivers Flowable hardened, fully patched and preconfigured so the engine and modeler are ready to run processes, with data on a dedicated disk. A unique admin credential is generated on first boot with no default login. Backed by 24/7 support.

Common uses

  • Business process automation
  • Approval workflows
  • Case management

Key features

  • Ready-to-use workflow engine on first boot with zero manual setup. The full Flowable UI - Modeler, Task, Admin and IDM - is installed, configured and running behind nginx over a dedicated 30 GiB gp3 PostgreSQL data volume. Sign in and design, deploy and run BPMN, DMN and CMMN models immediately. Eliminates the multi-step manual installation of Java, PostgreSQL, nginx and Flowable configuration that a from-scratch deployment requires.
  • Secure by default with unique per-instance credentials. Every instance generates its own administrator password on first boot and writes it to a root-only file - no shared or default credential exists in the image. The engine and PostgreSQL bind exclusively to loopback with nginx as the only external surface. The credential is verified end to end against the Identity Management REST API before the AMI is published.
  • 24/7 cloudimg support with one-hour average response for critical issues. Engineers assist via email and live chat with deployment sizing, external database configuration, authentication and LDAP integration, TLS termination, BPMN, DMN and CMMN modeling guidance, and Flowable and PostgreSQL version upgrades. Contact support before purchase to discuss your requirements or request a guided walkthrough.

Description

This is a repackaged open source software product wherein additional charges apply for cloudimg support services.

## A Working Business Process Engine in Minutes

Flowable is a widely adopted open source workflow and Business Process Management engine, executing BPMN 2.0 process models, DMN decision tables and CMMN cases on a lightweight, embeddable Java runtime. This AMI ships Flowable 6.8.1 with its complete web UI already installed, configured and running behind nginx, so you can model, deploy and run business processes the moment the instance boots. Design processes in the visual Modeler, hand work to people in the Task application, administer running process and case instances in the Admin console, and manage users and groups in the built-in Identity Management (IDM) app.

## Who This Is For

  • Financial services teams automating multi-level loan origination or purchase-order approval workflows that require audit trails and decision-table integration
  • Healthcare and life sciences organizations routing patient referrals, managing clinical trial case workflows, or orchestrating compliance review processes
  • HR and operations departments building employee onboarding flows, leave-approval chains, or IT service request processes with human-task assignment
  • Development teams embedding a standards-based BPMN, DMN and CMMN engine into their applications who want a running instance to model against immediately
  • Evaluators who want a fully working Flowable environment to explore the engine, the REST API and the modeling tools before committing to a build

## Application Stack

  • Flowable 6.8.1 - the full web UI (Modeler, Task, Admin and IDM) served as an executable Spring Boot WAR
  • Eclipse Temurin 17 JRE - the supported LTS Java runtime for the Flowable 6.8.x Spring Boot 2.7 line
  • PostgreSQL - the process, case, decision and identity data store, on a dedicated data volume
  • nginx - reverse proxy on port 80 serving a static health endpoint and forwarding to the UI
  • The engine and PostgreSQL bind to loopback; nginx is the only external surface

## Secure By Default

Upstream Flowable ships a well-known default administrator account. This image does not:

  • Every instance generates its own administrator password on first boot; the well-known default account is never present in the shipped image
  • The plaintext credential is written to a root-only file, so no shared or default login exists in the AMI
  • The administrator credential is verified end to end against the Identity Management REST API before the image is built, and a wrong password is proven to be rejected

## Getting Started

1. Launch the AMI on an m5.large instance or larger

2. SSH into the instance and read the generated administrator password from the root-only credentials file

3. Open your browser to the instance public address on port 80

4. Sign in as the administrator and open the Modeler to design a process, or the Admin console to inspect running instances

5. Deploy your first BPMN process and start an instance from the UI or the REST API

For a detailed walkthrough, see the user guide linked in the Additional Resources section.

## Recommended Instance Sizing

  • Recommended: m5.large (2 vCPU, 8 GiB RAM) - comfortable for the Spring Boot engine, PostgreSQL and nginx
  • Storage: OS disk plus a dedicated 30 GiB gp3 data volume for the PostgreSQL cluster and Flowable runtime, independently resizable
  • Networking: open ports 80 and 443 in your security group for browser access; the engine and database are loopback only

## 24/7 cloudimg Support

Every deployment is backed by cloudimg engineers available around the clock via email and live chat. Support covers:

  • Initial deployment and instance sizing guidance
  • Connecting Flowable to an external PostgreSQL or another supported database
  • Authentication and Identity Management configuration, including LDAP integration
  • TLS termination with Let's Encrypt or your own certificates
  • BPMN, DMN and CMMN modeling and deployment guidance
  • Flowable and PostgreSQL version upgrades and tuning

Critical issues receive a one hour average response time.

## Evaluation

This AMI uses standard AWS pay-as-you-go infrastructure billing. Launch an instance to evaluate Flowable's engine, modeling tools and REST API, and terminate at any time with no long term commitment. To discuss your deployment requirements or request a guided walkthrough, contact cloudimg support before or after purchase.
