Overview
ExpressionEngine is a flexible, feature rich, free and open source content management platform used by individuals and organisations to build and run websites. Instead of forcing content into a fixed blog or page model it gives you channels and custom fields, so you model your content exactly the way your site needs, then a powerful template engine with layouts, embeds and variables to present it however you like. It adds members with roles and granular permissions, categories, statuses and relationships, a built in file manager with image manipulation, multiple site support, front end forms and comments, and a REST style channel API. It runs on a classic PHP and MySQL compatible stack and is administered entirely from a web control panel.
It suits agencies, publishers, businesses and organisations that want a structured, self hosted CMS they fully control: content rich marketing and editorial sites, membership sites, and multi site setups maintained by an editorial team.
Why the cloudimg image
Standing up ExpressionEngine normally means installing a web server, PHP and its extensions and a database engine, unpacking the application, setting file ownership, running the web installer by hand and then removing it. cloudimg ships that whole stack assembled and proven, nginx with PHP 8.3 and MariaDB, so a working control panel answers within minutes of launch. Security is designed in: the image carries no administrator account, an empty configuration file and no database at all, and on first boot each instance mints its own application encryption key, session key, database password and administrator password into a root only file, so no two deployments ever share crypto material or a login. The installer is stashed outside the web root and removed after setup, and the web server refuses the whole system directory, so the setup wizard can never be reached by a visitor and the configuration secrets are never web fetchable. The database listens only on the machine itself, the base is fully patched with unattended security updates enabled, and every image comes with a paired step by step deploy guide and 24/7 cloudimg support.
