Overview

LabKey Server is the open source data platform that biomedical and translational research groups use to bring study data out of scattered spreadsheets and into one queryable system of record. Research teams organise work into projects and folders with fine grained permissions, define typed datasets and lists, and load assay results, participant data and sample records through the browser. A schema and query browser exposes every table with LabKey's own SQL dialect, so cohorts can be filtered, joined, charted and saved as named queries, while a wiki, an issue tracker and a full audit log keep the surrounding study documentation and change history in the same place as the data.

Why the cloudimg image

cloudimg packages the LabKey Server Community Edition distribution into a ready to run appliance, so the web interface answers as soon as the virtual machine finishes its first boot with nothing to download, unpack or configure. The image is secure by default: it ships with no live account at all, and every virtual machine generates its own site administrator password, database password and encryption key on first boot rather than carrying a shared credential. PostgreSQL is bundled and tuned on the same machine, the Java runtime and heap are sized so the platform runs cleanly rather than warning about its own configuration, and a small demo study is preloaded so the platform demonstrates real content the moment it comes up.

Common uses

  • Manage clinical and translational study data with participants, time points and typed datasets
  • Collect and query assay results, sample records and reference lists in one permissioned workspace
  • Give a research group a self hosted, auditable system of record instead of shared spreadsheets
