Overview

Open Archiver is an open source, self hosted email archiving platform built for organisations that must keep a complete, searchable and legally defensible record of their email. It connects to Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 or any IMAP server and continuously archives entire mailboxes, and it can also import existing PST, MBOX and EML files. Every message and attachment is stored immutably, its full text is extracted and indexed, and a searchable console lets compliance, legal and IT teams find and export exactly what they need.

It suits any organisation under a retention, audit or eDiscovery obligation that would rather hold its own archive inside its own cloud account than hand mailbox history to a third party service, and it replaces a stack that would otherwise mean assembling a runtime, a relational database, a search engine, a job queue and a reverse proxy by hand.

Why the cloudimg image

cloudimg delivers the whole platform assembled and tuned, so the archive is reachable and ready to connect a mailbox to within minutes of launch instead of after a multi component build. The image is secure by default: Open Archiver ships with no administrator account at all, and the first boot of every machine generates a unique database password, search master key, queue password, token signing secret, storage encryption key and administrator password, creates the administrator, then proves the new credentials authenticate while every upstream default is rejected. A dedicated data volume is attached and mounted for the archived messages, attachments and search index so the archive grows on its own disk, the complete corresponding source is shipped on the machine to satisfy the AGPL, the operating system ships fully patched with unattended security updates enabled, and every image includes 24/7 cloudimg support and a step by step deploy guide tested against the exact image you launch.
