Overview

AWStats is the long established open source log file analyser that turns raw server logs into a rich, readable statistics report. Point it at a web, FTP or mail server log and it produces a full graphical breakdown of who is using your service: visits and unique visitors, pages and hits, bandwidth consumed, how long people stay, which pages they enter and leave on, which browsers and operating systems they use, which search engines and keywords brought them, which sites referred them, which files they downloaded, what HTTP status codes they hit, and how much of your traffic is robots rather than people. Because it reads the log files your server already writes, it needs no tracking script, no cookies and no third party service, and it reports on every request rather than only on visitors who allow client side analytics. The current release available is AWStats 8.0.

Application Stack

This image delivers a complete, ready to use log analysis appliance. Building this by hand means installing a web server, installing Perl and the modules the analyser requires, deploying and configuring the analyser, wiring up its icon and data directories so the graphs actually draw, scheduling the log processing, and putting authentication in front of the whole thing before a single report is safe to expose. This image completes all of that before first boot: AWStats 8.0 runs behind the Apache web server with mod_cgid, log processing is scheduled to run automatically every ten minutes, and the reports are protected by password authentication from the moment the instance starts.

Secure By Default

On the first boot of your instance a one shot service generates a fresh password unique to that instance for the reporting site and writes it to a root only file, so no shared or default password ships in the image. Log processing can never be triggered from a browser, and the raw statistics data is not reachable over the web. The reporting site, including the report CGI, is only ever served behind HTTP Basic authentication.

Ready To Use

The instance analyses its own web server log out of the box, so it begins reporting on real traffic immediately, and it also ships a fully populated demonstration report, regenerated against the current date on first boot, so you can explore every screen and chart the moment you sign in. Browse to the instance address, sign in, and your statistics are there.
