Moodle High Availability

Overview

Moodle is the world's most widely used open source learning management system. This product deploys Moodle as a production, highly available environment using AWS CloudFormation, so a resilient e-learning platform is running in minutes with no manual wiring of the tiers.

Architecture

AWS WAF and an internet-facing Application Load Balancer span two Availability Zones. An Auto Scaling group runs the stateless Moodle web nodes and a dedicated cron node runs scheduled tasks. The database is Aurora Serverless v2 (PostgreSQL), shared course files live on Amazon EFS, and sessions and cache run on ElastiCache Serverless for Valkey, so any web node can serve any user and the group can replace an unhealthy node automatically.

Highly Available By Design

The load balancer, Auto Scaling web tier, EFS and Valkey are spread across two Availability Zones. Database Multi-AZ and EFS cross-AZ redundancy are optional parameters, so you choose the level of resilience and cost that fits your institution.

Secure By Default

Deployed in a dedicated VPC with public, application and isolated data subnets. Administrative access is restricted to a CIDR you supply, never the whole internet. Database credentials are generated at deploy time and stored in AWS Secrets Manager; least-privilege IAM roles are used throughout. AWS WAF managed rules protect the public endpoint.
